Ever wonder what it really takes to turn a bold writing choice into a story that works? What happens when you bring that same daring to your own short story drafts?
Join New Jersey author Alyson Mosquera Dutemple for this 90-minute short story writing workshop, offering an inside peek into the writing of her published collection, Marvelous Freaks of Nature. Alyson shares one gutsy writing move she made for each of the thirteen stories in her book and reveals how those leaps unlocked hidden potential in the drafts along the way.
Attendees get the chance to apply that same daring to their own drafts through prompts and exercises, so bring a piece of your own writing to experiment with. Whether you’re chasing a bolder voice, a stranger structure, or just permission to take a leap on the page, this workshop offers a hands-on look at what a well-placed gamble can do for a story.
All experience levels welcome.

Alyson Mosquera Dutemple’s debut short story collection MARVELOUS FREAKS OF NATURE! is forthcoming from Cornerstone Press (October 20 2026). Her work has appeared in journals and anthologies including Colorado Review, Alaska Quarterly Review, Salamander, DIAGRAM, Passages North, Redivider, Arts & Letters, Best Microfiction, and The Writer’s Chronicle, among others. Alyson has received support from Millay Arts, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, where she was a 2024 recipient of an Individual Artist Fellowship.
