Genre Confusion: Why Readers Put Your Book Down

A Story Lab Preview

Why do so many well-written manuscripts get a polite pass from agents and editors? What genre are you actually writing?

Most writers can’t answer that question with confidence, and it shows on the page. New writers often rush to blow up genre expectations before they’ve met them, and the result is confusing. Readers pick up a book with expectations built in, and a plot that ignores those expectations demands too much work for too little reward.

The first rule of Story Lab: you can’t exceed your reader’s expectations until you meet them first, whether you’re writing memoir or fiction.

In this one-day workshop, we dig into why genre isn’t just a marketing label, it’s the framework your story is built on. You learn to name the genre you’re really writing, spot the key scenes readers are waiting for, and use that clarity to unlock the revision that makes your manuscript click.

This session previews Story Lab, our new six-week story development workshop beginning January 2027. Genre Confusion is one of several issues we tackle, alongside:

  • Absence of thematic premise
  • Weak character arcs
  • A complicated or confusing plot
  • Lack of central dilemma, conflict, stakes
  • Inconsistent tone, style, pacing

Join us to solve your Genre Confusion and take the first step toward the book readers can’t put down.

"When I consult with a new writer, I can usually see their genre clearly — but when I ask them, they're not sure. That gap is why the story isn't living up to its potential. If the writer isn't crystal clear about what they're writing, they can't deliver on the promise being made to the reader. But here's the thing: their story already knows what it is. My job is to help them lean fully into the genre, find the map and follow it, so nobody gets lost."

A New Jersey native, Lizzie Finn is a writer, story analyst, and writing instructor who launched her creative career in the East Coast independent film scene, with credits including Kevin Smith’s View Askew Productions and Discovery’s Emmy-winning series Greatest Inventions with Bill Nye. After years of analyzing hundreds of screenplays, novels, and memoirs, Lizzie developed an intuitive ability to solve almost any story problem. In 2024, she launched Story Nerd HQ, where she works one-on-one with screenwriters, novelists, and memoirists to crack three essential codes: story structure, character development, and emotional architecture.
