From Poems to Chapbook
A generative and workshop course for building your collection.
Have a stack of poems but no idea how they fit together? Ready to learn what makes a chapbook a chapbook, and how to build one that’s ready to submit?
In this workshop, you read mentor poems, generate new work, and discover your voice with the help of fellow writers. You also learn how to shape your poems into a themed, cohesive collection, ready for a chapbook submission.
This intermediate class sharpens your feedback skills as much as your writing. You lend your perspective to your fellow writers’ work and, in turn, learn how to package your own collection through the lens of their responses. Expect moderate weekly homework, including submitting pieces for feedback and providing feedback for others.

- What is a chapbook?
- How to outline a collection
- Why smaller can be smarter
- Selecting your strongest pieces
- Editing for cohesion
- The publishing process
By the end of this class, you understand what a chapbook is and how to assemble a collection ready to send out to publishers.

Jenny Morelli is an NJ high school English teacher who lives with her husband and cat. She enjoys drinking tea in her yard while reading, writing, and feeding peanuts and corn to her squirrels, deer, and birds. She’s often inspired by her students and the memories they evoke of when she was their age, which has helped her hone myriad poems, memoirs, and young adult novels about self-discovery, self-acceptance, and forgiveness. She’s published in a number of literary magazines, both print and online, including Spillwords, Red Rose Thorns, Scars TV, and Bottlecap Press for four poetry chapbooks. She has recently received Project Write Now’s Champion of Voices Educator award, and was also nominated by Red Rose Thorns for the Pushcart Prize.
